Writing Stations:

Ideas for creating a fun Boot Camp experience:
  • Use provided dog tags to assign students to groups. Each student who receives the “Navy” tag will be in the Navy group, etc. Split students into “platoons” and use the labels to make them official.
  • Use camouflage strips to decorate your classroom prior to “boot camp” starting
  • If you are able, purchase camo ribbon, military accessories, etc. to get your students excited about writing boot camp!
  • Spice things up with a timer for an added thrill where students race against the clock.
  • Have students “earn their stripes” by adding medals or badges for correct answers.

    Your Boot Camp Review is a HUGE time saver and valuable resource reviewing with my fifth-grade students.
    It came at a perfect time to incorporate into our preparation for End-of-the-Year Language Arts Tests. My students have enjoyed using these cards. I purchased mini-clips so we could add to the book with each mini-lesson. I used the dog tags as desk name tags. I added to the Boot Camp theme by including a military song medley as well as our Presidential Physical Fitness practice each morning too. It was a perfect blend of subjects to teach. I also dressed up each day for two weeks to keep the theme going. As a class, we wrote a cadence chant to review these Language Arts skills.

    Thank you for sharing such a valuable tool and great product!

    FYI – I noticed two corrections to pass along as follows:
    First, I noticed SIMILE had an additional “I” on one of the cards.
    Next, in each example with the Sentence Stems for Text Evidence, this user suggests, “The period belongs within the quotation mark in these situations.”

    I loved this for preparing my class for state testing. We did run into some problems with the answer key for Figurative Language. The numbering was all off and it appeared that some of the answers didn’t fit. There were also extra cards with no space on the answer key. Card 19 also had a spelling error hate instead of ate. This caused my groups some confusion and stress until I got them straightened out. If you fix this I would love a new copy. Thank you for your creative resource. I love the effort and thoughtfulness put into this.

    They LOVE this! I used this as stations for 4th graders. I used a 45 minute timer and had a fun activity for them to complete as I checked work. This helped keep them motivated to complete each task thoroughly. I also wrote the number of examples for the figurative language to make it easier and used them on the white board rather than writing to make corrections easier. THANK YOU
