March Activities – Book Bracket – Basketball Reading – Basketball Brackets

Engage your students and build excitement for reading with this fun and friendly book competition.  This Book Bracket is a great addition to the basketball madness that happens every March with college basketball. Bring in the tournament fun, but instead of using basketball you will use books!

Your students will enjoy cheering on their favorite books and also completing a variety of reading comprehension activities. They will be so excited about competing in the Book Bracket that they won’t even realize how much they are reading! This activity is easy to implement in the classroom with all of the forms, reading logs, and game trackers provided for you. This competition is also great to implement at the beginning of the school year and carry out until the end. You can also hold competitions by grading periods or semester. The Book Bracket activity can be done with your class, your grade level team, or even the entire school! Your class is sure to have a blast with this fun and engaging reading activity!

A Book Tournament includes:

1. Regular Season Games – Book fans (students) will take part in consistent independent reading time to practice comprehension and fluency by reading several books of their choosing (aka teams)

2. Sweet Sixteen – Students will nominate their favorite books for the Book Bracket tournament.  16 books qualify for the road to Book Brackets!

3. The Build Up – During independent reading, students will read books from the sweet sixteen.  This will allow them to make informed decisions as they take part in choosing the winner of the book bracket.

4. Elite Eight – Students will vote for their top books until the number is narrowed down to the elite eight.

5. About the Team Advertisements – Students will start advertising for their favorite book by creating foam fingers, jerseys, or pennants to convince others to cheer for their favorite book. Students will also work on persuasive writing as they convince their classmates to support their book.

6. Final Four – Students will vote for their favorite books again and the group will be narrowed down to the final four.

7. World Famous Commercials – Students will choose their favorite book from the final four and create a persuasive commercial to build support for the book.

8. National Championship – Students will vote for their favorite book and the field will be narrowed down to the top two books.

9. Newscaster Debates – Your students will love taking on the role of the newscasters. They will host a debate and discuss why one of the teams should win over the other team.

10. THE BIG GAME – EVERY FAN COUNTS! Have students vote for their favorite book to find out who the winner is.

11. The After Party – Celebrate the winning book!
