4 Ways To Bring Science Career Activities Into The Classroom
Science careers are very exciting once in the field, but to a bunch of 6th and 7th graders, it probably doesn’t sound like the most exciting lesson they have ever experienced. There are some extra fun ways to get students wanting to learn about science careers. Try incorporating some science career activities into your next science block!
4 Science Career Activities For The Classroom
I absolutely love teaching my students about different science careers after high school. My students have never heard of many of the jobs. They become fascinated and interested in learning about the career after if I can be the teacher who encourages one or two students to pursue a stem career or dig dino bones. I have done my job! I know incorporating science careers into lesson plans can be difficult for teachers. Here are 4 science career activities I am sure all students will love!
1. Science Career Readings & Debates
It is always important for students to learn about the different science careers. Many will know about stem careers, but many other careers are entirely unknown. Start by having students read about each career or break them into science buddies or teams to read.
It is always fun to add an element of ELA into science and have students debate which career is cooler or harder. It is awesome to hear all of the reasons kids come up with!

Looking for a science career activities bundle?
The Careers in Science bundle has over 10 science career readings included, and they range from Astronomer to Speleologist with careers like Forensic Scientist, and Laboratory Technician sprinkled in between.
2. Interactive Web Bulletin Board
If there is a bulletin board outside (or inside) your classroom, use it to your advantage! Use the bulletin board to display the different science careers available to students.
One way to make the bulletin board interactive with string and index cards! While exploring the different science careers, discuss each and connect it to another career you have discussed. Use string and have a student write down the connection. Connect the image and description of the science career using the string and tack (or staple) the explanation of the relationship between them.
It is incredible how the spider web will grow while learning, and if the bulletin board is outside your classroom, other students are sure to stop and look at the spider web of connections!
Having already laminated science career cards and pictures can be very helpful with this activity. Easily make a science career bulletin board using my Science Career Bundle.
3. Science Resume/Job Posting
A great way to get students engaged in getting a job is to create a resume or a job posting to go along with the science career they decided to search for or gather more info.
Many free resources are available, such as job posting outlines or resume outlines. Having students think about and explore what types of traits and education is needed to go into different science careers is a great way to get them to dive deeper into the idea of science as a career.
4. Career Picture Book
Got some artists in the class? Have students learn about a science career and create a picture book describing the profession. It is a great way to represent the jobs differently. Plus, it gets students’ creative juices flowing.
Having an Archeologist named Arche or a Marine Biologist named Martha jump out and describe their career makes learning so much more fun.
Just think of the titles and stories that students create and design! It would make a great extension activity to have students go into an elementary school or primary grades and read their books aloud to a class.
Exploring Science Career Activities in the Classroom
Science careers are very important in this day and age, and having students research and learn about them does not need to be boring!
Try incorporating these science career activities into a science block and watch students learn and have fun!
