Parent Involvement in the Classroom: 10 Parent Teacher Communication Examples
Building strong connections between parents and teachers is vital for a successful school year. As an elementary school teacher, you have the power to make a lasting impact on your students’ lives. By actively involving parents in their child’s education, you can create a supportive and collaborative environment that enhances learning. In this blog post, we’ll explore some simple and actionable steps you can take to strengthen parent connections, ensuring a fruitful and engaging school year for everyone involved.

Have you ever had a parent that completely ruined your day? Yelled at you, emailed you at all hours of the day, demanded your cell phone number, questioned your teaching skills, etc.? Me, too. It’s a terrible feeling.
One of the things I’ve learned over the past 11 years of teaching is that it often comes down to communication. Some parents just need lots of details, extra communication, and sometimes just need reassurance.
Now, I’m not saying that communication will fix all of the problems, but it sure does help! Start the year off strong by over-communicating everything. You’ll quickly learn the parents who appreciate this and it will often help you create a strong connection right off the bat.
Here are 9 game-changing tips to help you create a much stronger relationship with your parents:
1. Small Gestures have a Big Impact
To kick off the school year on a positive note, consider including a little treat with a thoughtful note for parents during the first meeting, meet-the-teacher event, or open house. This small gesture demonstrates your desire for a strong parent-teacher partnership and shows that you have taken the time to think of them. Grab these gift tags to have a great first impression!
2. Create a Picture Perfect Moment
Capture special moments of their child’s first week of school through photographs with these photo booth props. These can include holding a “1st day of school” sign, engaging in science experiments, participating in “about me” activities, or playing during recess. Email these pictures to parents, ensuring you only include their child in the photos to respect privacy policies. As an extra bonus, consider printing out the pictures and sending them home during the first or second week of school.
3. Spread Positivty ASAP
Within the first five days of school, send a positive note home to parents. Though it may seem like a lot of work during your busy time, it’s worth the effort. By sending the note early on, before any negative behaviors arise, you communicate to parents that you genuinely care about their child’s success. Students will also love being acknowledged and praised.
4. Weekly Reflection Logs or Emails
Consider implementing a weekly reflection log or sending a weekly email to parents. The reflection log is a preferred method for many teachers as it holds students accountable for their actions and provides parents with a comprehensive overview of their child’s progress, upcoming events, and test scores. This approach also gives parents an opportunity to read something their child has written that week, fostering a sense of connection. This is a FREE weekly reflection log!
5. The Power of Personal Connection
When a student misbehaves in class, make the first contact with the parent through a phone call rather than an email. Speaking directly conveys a stronger sense of partnership. During the conversation, ask parents how you can help their child in the future and prevent similar situations. These small acts demonstrate your commitment to collaboration and can make a significant difference in the long run.
6. Continued Relationship Building
Throughout the school year, don’t forget to nurture positive relationships with parents. Send periodic emails informing them of exciting moments their child experienced in class, such as acts of kindness or welcoming new students. By sharing these highlights, you let parents know that you see the best in their child, strengthening the bond between home and school.
7. Gratitude Goes a Long Way
Express your appreciation by writing thank-you notes to parents for their contributions, whether it’s bringing in supplies, organizing birthday treats, or attending field trips. Taking the time to write a personal thank-you note and sealing it in an envelope adds an extra touch of thoughtfulness that parents will truly appreciate. This act of gratitude not only strengthens your relationship with parents but also brings a sense of joy to your students when they receive such notes. 8. Celebrate Memories
At the end of the school year, go through all the pictures you have taken and email them to parents. Although it may take some time to separate and organize the pictures for each student, the effort is truly worth it. Parents will cherish these memories and feel grateful for the connection you have built throughout the year.
9. Organize Parent Workshops or Family Involvement Nights
Hosting parent workshops is an excellent way to engage parents and provide them with valuable information. These workshops can cover topics such as homework strategies, reading at home, and effective communication techniques. By offering practical advice and strategies, you empower parents to actively participate in their child’s education, leading to improved academic outcomes. 10. Celebrate Parent Involvement
Recognize and appreciate parents who actively participate in their child’s education. Highlight their contributions in newsletters, on bulletin boards, or during parent-teacher conferences. By acknowledging their involvement, you reinforce the importance of parent connections and encourage other parents to get involved.
BONUS TIPS:
The most popular question is now….Well, what happens now that the student has acted out during class at school? Call the parent first. A voice over the phone is always better than an email…especially the first contact. Ask parents: What can I do to help your child in the future? How can I help them avoid these situations? Parents want to know it’s a partnership. These small acts will make a huge difference down the road.
Looking for a convenient tool to stay consistent with these strategies? I’ve created a FREE parent communication log for you to download. Incorporate it into your weekly routine, allowing students to reflect and share important information with their parents. Starting this practice from the first day of school will not only foster effective communication but also show your dedication to maintaining strong parent connections throughout the year. Your families will appreciate the effort, and together, you can create a truly exceptional school year.
Remember, the journey of building parent connections may encounter hurdles along the way. One common challenge is parents who may be less engaged due to various reasons. However, instead of giving up, consider this an opportunity to reach out and explore different approaches. Personal stories can help connect with parents who may initially seem disinterested. Share stories of students who faced obstacles but overcame them with the support of their parents and teachers. These narratives inspire parents to believe in the power of their involvement and motivate them to take action.
As you reflect on the ideas shared in this blog post, remember that fostering parent connections is an ongoing process that requires dedication and effort. Every small step you take to involve parents in their child’s education brings you closer to building a strong and supportive community. Embrace the power of open communication, active listening, and collaboration, and watch as your students thrive in an environment where teachers and parents work hand in hand.
Now, armed with these actionable steps and a problem-solving mindset, you have the tools to strengthen parent connections and create an exceptional school year for both you and your students. Together, let’s build a foundation of collaboration, trust, and shared success.
